You’ve got the paleo crowd who think plants are tasty condiments to real food and vegetarians who think plants are the way forward, however both parties (and everyone in between) could benefit from eating weeds and wild plants for high nutrition.

Many wild perennial grasses provide a wide array of biologically active substances. Individual samples of wild flora are often richer in these compounds than cultivated plants.

Examples are nettle, dandelion, plantain, mint, coltsfoot, kislitsa (name for acid tasting grasses), rose bay, willow herb, borage and the common sow thistle. Know your flora, of course, to make sure you’re getting something edible.

You can harvest wild edible plants from early spring to late autumn. However, do not collect plants in the city within 500 yards of a street or railroad track because plants assimilate lead and other harmful substances from automobile and locomotive exhaust.

You should collect young, juicy sprouts and leaves, wash them carefully and then scald them before using them raw.
