As coaches and trainers we often get asked the above question and our first impulse is to respond with our job title or vague outline of our daily tasks.
“I’m a nutrition coach.”
“I’m a personal trainer.”
“I run a Crossfit gym.”
“Oh, I have an online site and I do some stuff in fitness.”
But when someone asks what you do, they’re really asking, “How does what you do affect me?”, and gives you the perfect opportunity to promote yourself and to spread the word about your business, services, etc.
What we really need is a one-liner that explains what we do in such a way that people “get it” and understand why it matters.
Sounds easy, but in reality it’s not!
A simple script you can use to help communicate what you do, who you serve, and the results you get is as follows:
>> I (what you do) for (who you serve) so that they can (master, overcome, defeat) their (struggling point) to gain (a huge benefit).
What’s great about using this script is it immediately tells the people you meet what you do, who you do it for and the type of results you get. It’s not just a small-talk exchange any more, it’s a clear, concise statement that has the potential to get both parties excited.
As we always tell our clients, practice makes perfect, so post your version of the above script in the comments below and let us know your results from answering the “So What Do You Do?” question.
